Inspiration : Visual Diaries

Nicole Franzen, a contributing photographer to DARA Artisans, shares her Must-Follow instagram accounts.

Scrolling through the Instagram feed of Brooklyn-based photographer Nicole Franzen is like taking a journey around the world—one bathed in ochre lighting, abundant in poignant cityscapes, and never short of a perfectly prepared negroni.

Franzen’s knack for making life’s ordinary moments—such as her morning’s cortado—appear extraordinary is testament to her keen eye, nuanced sense of timing, and raw instinct. It also doesn’t hurt that her occupation as a lifestyle, food, and travel photographer means she has ample material to work with: From visiting artisans in Antwerp to capturing intimate, behind-the-scenes moments with chefs like April Bloomfield, the requirements of her job make for a truly compelling visual diary.

Given her credentials, we asked Franzen to share the Instagram accounts that she finds inspiring. She obliged.

Ariele Alasko @arielealasko “Ariele is the “Queen Bee” in the Brooklyn creative circle. There is nothing that this gal cannot do. I’m lucky to call her a friend and am always amazed at the projects she undertakes. Her style is effortless.”

Max Poglia @maxpoglia “Max is another dear friend. He designs beautiful leather bags, knives, and wool blankets, all of which are made in his home country of Brazil. His world is not one to be missed.”

Crescioni @crescioni_ca  “I discovered Crescioni and her lookbook about a year or so ago. She designs gorgeous leather necklaces, often shot against a desert landscape. Being a New Mexican native, it drew me in: I fell in love.”

Primitive Reserve @rochelle_cheri “I can’t remember how I stumbled upon Rochelle, but I am happy I did. I love her woodwork, which uses a lot of walnut and brass. She has a clean, refined look that is still approachable. She also captures beautiful shots around Los Angeles, which ties together her whole story.”

Allied Maker @alliedmaker “Simply put, the most beautiful handcrafted lighting by Ryan Rizzo.”

Blockshop Textiles @blockshoptextiles “I met Lily Stockman some years back, way before Blockshop came into existence. I fell in love with her spirit, humor and style. When Lily and her sister, Hopie, started Blockshop Textiles – producing a beautiful array of hand block printed scarves using organic dyes in Bagru, India – I was hooked. She effortlessly brings all her worlds together – India, Joshua Tree, Los Angeles – in one colorful punch.”

Amy Merrick @amy_merrick “Amy is one damn talented floral designer and someone I have the privilege to call a friend. Over the past six months, her Instagram has been a real treat: She’s been traveling all over Europe and Northern Africa. The girl has an amazing eye; I love seeing into her world.”

Camille Becerra @camillebecerra “A dear friend and chef, her account showcases the artistry of cooking and also provides a behind-the-scenes look at her hip New York City restaurant, Navy.”

April Valencia @april_valencia “April is a total creative spirit – the whole package. I’ve loved watching her photography evolve. She lights up a room and you can’t get enough. I love getting glimpses into her world. ”

Clam Lab @clamlab “I adore Clair and her ceramics. We’ve been pals for a few years, and I’ve really enjoyed watching her business excel.”

Jessie Webster @jessiewebster “Jessie is an amazing photographer based in Los Angeles. She’s extremely talented and her Instagram is one of my favorites: A must-follow.”
