5 Ways to Wear Your Matta Sarong

Matta sarongs are handwoven and hand-spun in India, mixing centuries-old techniques with a modern color palette. We can’t get enough of their stunning patterns and soft cotton texture. Best of all, they are incredibly versatile. It’s amazing how a single piece of clothing can transform into so many different looks. Check out five of our favorite ways to wear them.

  • Transform your sarong into a maxi skirt by tying it at the waist in a double knot. For a shorter skirt, simply fold the sarong in half before tying. Unless you're wearing it over a bathing suit, secure the edges with a few safety pins to avoid any Marilyn Monroe moments.

  • You won't believe how easy it is to turn your sarong into a sophisticated halter dress. Start with the sarong behind you, holding opposite corners in each hand. Wrap the two ends under your arms and twist them together at the center of your chest to form a rope. Cross the ends behind your neck and fasten with a knot.

  • Show off your tan with a strapless bandeau look. Begin with the sarong in front of your body and wrap the corners around to your back. Cross and wrap them back around to the front. Fasten them in a double knot slightly off to the side to create an elegant, asymmetrical drape.

  • With generous yet lightweight proportions, your sarong can double as a scarf or shawl. Tie it around your neck to keep warm on a breezy summer outing, or wrap it around your shoulders like a pashmina.

  • You can also use your sarong for more than just clothes or accessories! Remarkably versatile, it also makes a great beach blanket for stretching out in the sun, or a tablecloth for impromptu picnics.
